Red before bed, how's your head?

Hazy smoke blowing in from the north and north-west of NSW means terrible air quality but gorgeous sunsets.



On the other hand, it looks nicely grey this morning which means I won't be working in the full sun at a friend's working bee today. I'll take it!

It's the first day of December. The sky is thoroughly overcast, and there's a cold gusty wind - the temperature is 37° F/2.8° C. It's going to start raining here very soon, but the rain will be mixed with freezing rain, sleet, and snow, and the temperatures are going to keep going down. The prediction is for all that wintry precipitation to continue and turn back into light rain, but then become more frozen and hazardous through all of Sunday and Monday and into Tuesday morning. Weather that I would normally have expected for early December. I hear the trucks going by on the main road, spraying ice-preventing "brine" on the pavement. It's easier to get into the mood for the winter holidays when the weather is wintry.

It's gorgeous out right now, cold (around 28 F) and calm with heavy snowflakes whispering down steadily. The day was chilly and dry and very still. A solidly light grey sky stretched from one horizon to another. When the snow arrived just after sunset there was no fanfare, just light flakes suddenly falling into my deck.

We already have almost two inches of snow on the ground. While tomorrow will be a slippery mess, especially if we get a rain changeover, tonight I'm reveling in the peacefulness of winter arriving at night.
