There was a very impressive thunderstorm this evening. We heard the first rumbles around 6, and it didn't fully reach us until 7. The sky was more green than grey—not quite tornado green, but close to it—and the lightning and thunder were constant for something like half an hour, with bouts of torrential rain. We cuddled up with our kid and watched the storm through the window like it was a movie.

Sometimes rain clears the air, but the prediction is for more storms today and tomorrow, so I'm guessing the air will continue thick and unbreathable. After that we'll get a few days of sunny weather and the humidity should ease off a bit, though it'll still be very hot.

This is all perfectly normal New York City summer weather, incidentally—there's a reason my "summer" userpic is a painting called Love in a Rainstorm. I'm always baffled when shoe stores insist that rain boots aren't needed outside of spring and fall.

It's been beastly hot here, and the air quality is atrocious. In the late afternoon I took a short walk to the store, no more than a mile there and back, in one of my most lightweight masks and a cotton t-shirt and shorts, and by the time I was home I was short of breath and had literal rivulets of sweat running down my back. It wouldn't feel so bad in the shade, even a little breezy, and then I'd step out into full sun and feel the heat of it smack me in the chest like a physical force. Our air conditioners are struggling and we have a family policy of only running the washer/dryer and dishwasher overnight so we don't add to the daytime load on the power grid. Really looking forward to Thursday's promised thunderstorms.

It's overcast and rainy this morning. I'm hoping it lasts all day. We haven't had a good rainy day in a while.

It's been unseasonably hot lately. I've been trying to go for periodic walks. I don't mind the heat or the humidity so much as long as there's a haze to block some of the sun. The South Florida sun is brutal.

I live in a very strange spot. I'm surrounded by suburban development on every side, but I live on a private road next to what I assume are homesteaders of some kind which provides a buffer from the endless strip malls and housing developments all around. When I walk, until I get out to the main road, it's easy to forget where I am, and focus on the rustle of snakes and lizards in the foliage, the occasional butterfly or dragon fly, the egrets, the bluejays. I saw what I think was an Eastern Hognose the other day. It was all black, and so still I thought at first that it was dead until it decided it didn't like the creepy biped staring at it and noped out back into the trees.

I'm noticing how vegetal things smell when it's muggy out. It's not a pleasant smell, exactly, but it's earthy and soothing in its way.

We had a cooler period recently where temps dropped to 17 degrees C in the day and 10 degrees at night, but today was back at 24 degrees. Super high tide at my local beach to go with the great weather, so high that the usual oystercatchers and ducks were all clustered up on the grassy verge as the beach was gone. Some local dogs enjoyed themselves though - that's one in the top pic making waves, going after a stick.

We seem to be in the middle of summer proper here in Auckland. Warm weather, but thankfully not too hot, nicely in the twenties (centigrade, so 70-85 degrees F) and stable, but pretty humid. A nice breeze today and only 65% humidity and 24 degrees C. Here are some shots of the harbour I live on - apologies to Northern hemisphere people troubled by things like refrigerated iguanas!

There's a joke that goes:

Australia; the only country on Earth where the second-lowest fire danger is classified as 'HIGH'.

Ten days ago, Sydney had it's first day under a 'CATASTROPHIC' fire danger rating (LOW-MODERATE, HIGH, VERY HIGH, SEVERE, EXTREME, CATASTROPHIC).

This is what the world looked like around 5pm that day, with smoke from the fires up north, and the city hushed in uncertainty:

Weather

Ten days later, while sections of NSW are still quite very much on fire, and parts of Victoria have caught fire, Sydney has had a cool change come through.

There's a little bit of rain - not even enough to fill the small water tank, though.

The cooler weather should be sticking around Sydney for a week (where 'cooler' right now means 23-33C, yes, I know) with intermittent showers. It's not the steady rain we need, but we'll take it over CATASTROPHIC fire days anytime!
